Castles North of Crinan
Duntrune Castle
Located on the north shore of Loch Crinan, it is considered to be the oldest occupied castle in Scotland. Originally built by the MacDougall clan in the 12th century, it was taken by the Clan Campbell, and is now owned by the chief of the clan Malcolm.
Craignish Castle
Craignish Castle is situated on Loch Beag, two miles north of Craignish Point, and dates back from the 11th century. Built by the Campbell clan in Baronial style, it has been converted into apartments.
Ardmaddy Castle
The early tower house of this castle was built by the MacDougall’s in the late 1400s. In 1648 the castle passed into Campbell ownership and remained in their ownership until 1933.
Shuna Castle
Shuna Castle was built as recently as 1911 but fell into disrepair in the 1980s.
